DBWV Winter Shootout a Muddy Success!!!
-
The 2008 DBWV Winter Shootout was muddy, cloudy and wet but overall, a great success. Major rain
in the weekend forecast left teams from all across Southern California questioning the reality of
a Weekend Tournament. Last minute field cancellations and game reschedules made the Tournament
task more difficult, but with the help of club volunteers and a relentless Tournament Director,
the Winter Tournament prevailed.
Early forecasts for Saturday predicted constant downpour, but as the week went on the clouds
lightened up. Saturday ended up being a beautiful day of sunshine and soccer. Teams battled in
the early preliminary rounds fighting for a spot in the Sunday Finals. The rain clouds came in on
Saturday evening and poured over an inch of rain through the night. The sun fought its way through
the clouds Sunday morning as if to say “the show must go on!” Despite the drenched fields, the
Tournament continued. Teams continued their journey to the top as they played in muddy conditions
on wet surfaces where slide tackling took on a whole new meaning. Teams that once had the
separation of uniquely colored jerseys now blended as 22 players all wearing the same muddy brown.
As the day progressed, the rain clouds hovered over. By 1 p.m. the dark clouds started unleashing
their rain. Teams continued to play and players were having more fun than ever as they tried to
get as muddy and wet as possible.
In the end Mother Nature forced a few Championships games to be reschedule, but Champions where
crowned, finalists were honored and parents were soaked. The DBWV Winter Shootout prevailed through
the weekend. Players and parents alike expressed their excitement on coming back for the March
Edition of the DBWV Shootout. It is only with the hard work of all the many volunteers who worked
for weeks that DBWV was able to pull off such an amazing weekend against all odds! Now let’s
prepare for March!
